Wallpaper and Types of Wallpaper Used in Interiors

Wallpaper is the most commonly used wall coverings in residential interior spaces. In this article, various types of wallpaper according to Material, type of installation, style, life stage, pattern and pattern type, theme, use, etc. are listed.

Wallpaper

Usually sold in rolls and applied on wall with wallpaper adhesive. Available in a variety of colors, textures, themes, designs etc. Available in continuous pattern, border pattern, panels. In the market, sidewalls and borders are the terms popular. Sidewall covers major surface of the wall, whereas borders are applied at the top of the wall to complement the sidewall covered surface. Murals are a type of sidewall. Borders are produced in narrower sheets.

Sizes : Range from 521 mm to 711mm wide.

A single roll yields 27-30 sq ft.

Wall paper designs are printed by using a variety of methods.

Types of Wallpapers

According to Material

  • Vinyl coated Paper with roller printed images
    • Consists of a paper substrate coated with acrylic/vinyl or solid PVC with a thickness of 0.05 -0.13mm.
    • Not suitable for commercial applications.
    • As these are resistant to moisture and soiling, they are used in residential kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry-rooms.
  • High-quality Paper with screen-printed images.
  • Fabric
  • Grass-cloth
  • Wood

According to Type of Application

  • Non-Pasted- without adhesive, glue has to be applied separately while installing.
  • Pre-Pasted – adhesive has been applied to the back of the wallpaper already.
  • Peel and Stick – self-adhesive wallpaper just peel and stick.

How to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper?

1.Prepare and Measure

Prepare the surface of the wall for clean and dry and remove any switch plates or covers/wall fixtures attached to it.

Use a level and pencil to lightly mark a plumb line.

2.Cut wallpaper

Cut strips of wallpaper as per the height of the wall 2-3 inches more. Care should be taken to align any design or pattern from strip to strip while cutting.

3.Peel and Lay Position

Peel a part of backing and hold to position the wallpaper from top of the wall and align vertically as per the marks.

Reposition if not aligned properly.

4.Stick wallpaper firmly

Peel away the backing and press the wallpaper evenly till you reach bottom. Use a squeegee to smooth the surface. Cut parts of wallpaper if any vents or outlets are present. Trim off excess material at ceiling and at base.

5.Repeat Next Wallpaper

Repeat the next wallpaper to the right edge of previous wallpaper aligning the design or pattern continuously until it reaches the right end of the wall

How to Install Prepasted Wallpaper

1.Prepare and Measure

Prepare the surface of the wall for clean and dry and remove any switch plates or covers/wall fixtures attached to it.

Measure the length and width of the wall and mark the lines vertically as per the available width of the wallpaper.

2.Cut Wallpaper

Cut strips of wallpaper as per the height of the wall 2-3 inches more. Care should be taken to align any design or pattern from strip to strip while cutting.

3.Activate the Glue

Prepasted wallpaper has thin glue as a backing layer. The glue becomes active and sticky when wet. Apply water with spray or as per manufactures direction to become wet. Wait for 5mins for the glue to be activated.

4.Lay to Position

Hold to position the wallpaper from top of the wall and align vertically as per the marks. Reposition if not aligned properly.

5.Stick Wall Paper Firmly

Use a squeegee to smooth the surface. Cut parts of wallpaper if any vents or outlets are present. Trim off excess material at ceiling and at base.

6.use a sponge to wipe any excess glue
