In recent days, with the improvements in technology, various types of ceiling lights are available as per design, customer needs, aesthetics, function, style, forms, etc. Proper selection of ceiling lights not only helps in illuminating the room but also creates an ambient atmosphere.

Ceiling light fixtures are attached directly to the ceiling either surface mounted or hanging. A dimmer can be added to adjust lighting as needed. The mood and atmosphere of the room can be altered by using dimmer and Shades to create softer lighting.

According to Mount Type

Flush Mount Lights

  • These fixtures lay flat or attached directly close to the ceiling.
  • Mostly suitable for low-height rooms
  • Available in a variety of shapes like square, round, drum, bell, assorted, etc.
  • Available in a variety of finishes like brass, nickel, chrome, white, etc.
  • Blend with surface and surroundings and spread illumination over a large area

Semi Flush Lights

  • These fixtures are attached to the ceiling light creating a gap of 4″ to 8″ between the ceiling and the light.
  • Available in a variety of shapes like square, round, drum, bell, assorted, etc.
  • Available in a variety of finishes like brass, nickel, chrome, white, etc.

Chandelier

  • The chandelier is a type of hanging light from the ceiling with delicately carved branches and holding multiple bulbs.
  • Chandeliers provide aesthetic appeal and are very decorative.
  • Crystal and glass chandeliers enhance the lighting illumination and create beautiful patterns
  • They add value to the house and are the most elegant light fixtures.
  • There are plenty of variants depending on style, size, illumination, etc., available in the market today.
  • The bottom of the chandelier is usually hung 30-32″ above the top of the table.

Pendant Lights

  • Pendant lights hang from the ceiling with a single source of light by a cord/chain/metal rod.
  • They are often used in multiples hung over a kitchen countertop in a straight line.
  • They appear elegant and mostly used over kitchen counters, and common areas and create beautiful lighting displays.
  • There are plenty of variants depending on style, size, illumination, etc., available in the market today.
  • Pendant lights are commonly spaced between 30″ to 36″ apart measured from the center of the fixture.
  • These lights are usually hung between 28″ to 36″ above a countertop or dining table surface.

Track Lights

  • Track lighting is where lighting fixtures are arranged on a track which brings power to them.
  • Perform best as an accent light or task light to highlight a display on the wall such as a painting etc.,
  • Usually mounted to a ceiling but it can be mounted to a wall, a beam, or a dropped ceiling.
  • Track lighting fixtures are available and a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.
  • Tracks can be fixed or flexible.
  • Track length can vary, usually between 2′-8′.

Recessed Lights

  • Type of lighting fixture installed into the ceiling and sit flush with the ceiling. They are installed by creating a hollow space inside the ceiling.
  • The source of light is not visible creating a clean and sleek ceiling surface. The light fixture inside diffuses the light from the glass panels or varies as per the design of the fixture.
  • They are available in various trims, sizes, lighting colors, and temperatures.
  • Recessed lights are mainly used for rooms with lower ceiling heights so that there is no obstruction to the space below.
  • Two main components of recessed light fixtures are
    • Housing – actual light fixture
    • Trim-decorated molding outside the recess. They absorb extra light and create a crisp architectural appearance.
  • Trim Styles
    • Cone Trims – produce low brightness atmosphere.
    • Lens Trim – provides diffuse light and protects the lamp.
    • Luminous Trims – combine the diffused quality of lensed trim but with an open downlight component.
    • Adjustable Trims – Allows for the adjustment of light.

According to Fixture Material

Glass

  • Types – Clear glass, colored glass, etched glass, frosted glass, polished glass.
  • Different types of glass design capture the light and diffuse light very well. They create beautiful patterns on the walls

Metal

Ex.- Steel

Offers neutral styling creating a simple and elegant look.

Crystal

Beautiful glass crystals create a shimmery glow in any room and offer a luxury feel.

Fabric

It offers an aesthetic appeal and a relaxing mood. Mostly preferred for bedrooms.

Acrylic

Mostly suitable for modern and contemporary décor.
